What is an electronic identity?

A persons online identity

An electronic identity (eID) is a digital method for people to claim their identity in an online context and are the equivalent to physical forms of IDs. eIDs are not only as trustworthy as physical IDs, but they are also safer and more convenient to use.

Know Your Customer (KYC)

Authentications or digital signatures with eIDs provide secure user verifications since they are compliant with the eIDAS regulation and help ensure that companies stay KYC and AML compliant. This means that companies can be safe knowing that their customers are who they say they are through eID authentications or signatures.

The benefits of eIDs

Simplified customer journey

Companies can allow their users to authenticate themselves or digitally sign documents by using their existing eID to provide a simple and recognizable process. This greatly reduces friction and the risk of visitors abandoning their user journey.

Ease of integration

Companies benefit by plugging into the existing eID ecosystem instead of developing their own methods and processes from scratch. This frees up developer resources to focus on more valuable business priorities.

Improved trust

Relying on government, bank or mobile-maintained digital IDs helps to put your customers at ease. As such, merely highlighting your integration with established eIDs serves to earn customer trust and improve your brand reputation.

Reduced risk of fraud

A person’s national eID is highly secure. Using such digital identity methods can greatly reduce the risk of fraud or different forms of identity theft. If your business relies on accurately establishing a person’s identity (e.g. banks or insurance companies), using eIDs is a no-brainer.

Regulatory compliance

Regulations surrounding the use and storage of sensitive personal information have been getting increasingly stringent (e.g. GDPR). Integrating government-backed eIDs into your workflow helps you ensure compliance with relevant regulations like eIDAS.
