The challenge: compliance with the new utility regulation
By June 1, 2025, Norwegian utility providers will be required to securely authenticate their customers. While the rules don’t dictate exactly how this should be done, companies must be able to prove a customer’s identity upon request.
For Vibb, the priority was clear: securely collect social security numbers (SSNs) and confirm that each customer is who they say they are. Simple username-password combinations or verification via telephone wouldn’t be enough.
The solution: BankID authentication
Vibb chose BankID as the safest and most reliable way to meet the new regulatory requirements. With BankID in place, Vibb can easily verify and document customer identities for new registrations and provider switches.
While regulation was the main driver, Vibb quickly saw other benefits of using BankID, especially for improving the customer journey and ensuring data accuracy.
The solution focused on integrating BankID for new customer registration. As such, all customer data—name, SSN, etc.—was validated from the start.

The solution contributes to a more seamless and efficient customer experience: the customer can easily confirm their information, and we reduce the number of manual entries and forms. This enables a higher degree of automation in our processes. For us, it is essential to be confident that customer data is correct. With BankID, we can securely verify the customer's identity and information at the time of ordering, eliminating the need for time-consuming follow-up or corrections afterward.”
Once the tech team at Vibb had what they needed, getting BankID up and running was a straightforward process:
“It was easy to get started with testing and verifying test users, and straightforward to set up the application for Vibb in the dashboard. Everything was well documented, and I found all the information I needed. From there, the process was very smooth,” says Hanne Enger, Senior Software Developer at Vibb.
Vibb also replaced one-time SMS passwords with BankID login in their customer app, which added an extra security layer beyond the initial registration. While the regulation only covers registration, Julie explains that Vibb saw value in ensuring that every login was securely tied to the right person.
“It feels safer to use BankID—for both the customer and us. People recognize and trust BankID, while it also contributes to increased security, reliable identification, and better privacy.”
